Staff Sergeant Reunites with Retired Military Dog After Two Years Apart

San Antonio, TX, Dec. 22, 2023, 8:52 PM IST – Air Force Staff Sergeant Mike Alcala was overjoyed this week when he was finally reunited with his former military working dog, John. Alcala and John had worked side-by-side for three years, conducting bomb detection sweeps at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

In 2021, Alcala’s duties shifted and he sadly had to part ways with his four-legged partner. “Leaving him was rough,” Alcala said. “It was definitely hard.” At the time, Alcala made a promise that he would come back for John someday.

That day arrived last week when 10-year-old John officially retired from active duty after eight years of loyally serving his country. Once Alcala heard the news, he immediately asked his wife Brittany if John could live out his golden years as part of their family.

John arrived in San Antonio courtesy of the American Humane organization and received a hero’s welcome from the Alcala family. “I instantly trusted John with his life,” said Brittany as their baby daughter Avery met the newest member of the household.

A tearful Alcala scratched John behind the ears and said, “How you doing Bubbas? I missed you bud. Welcome home.” The two had clearly formed an unbreakable bond during their time together in Hawaii, working side-by-side to keep service members and civilians safe.

Both Alcala and John made tremendous sacrifices in service to their country. Now in retirement, this veteran and his brave canine partner have finally been reunited for good. As Alcala put it, “It’s amazing.”

Besides being a Father, a Freelance Content creator and a Marketing Professional, my love for Dogs has been a permanent feature throughout. I vividly remember the first Indian Spitz puppy my father gifted me on my 5th birthday. Caring for him and seeing him grow with all it's idiosyncrasies, established my lifelong love for this furry creature - a symbol of Love and Faithfulness. I have tried to share my learnings through all these years, so that dog lovers can benefit. Something I missed growing up in those "non-connected' times.
